Dear Attorneys,

I have been kept in the dark when it comes to the finances. For the entirety of my marriage, my wife has paid all of the bills – I just contribute to the joint account. Now that my divorce is starting to really get going, my attorney is asking me for so much financial information that I just don’t have! What do I do now?

Sincerely,

Blind to the Bills

Dear Blind,

That scenario, while very frustrating, is much more common than you think. If there are certain documents that you just simply can’t access, such as tax returns, your attorney can request that your spouse (or their attorney) be the one to request them. However, documents in your name such as the mortgage or your own retirement account, can be accessed with a simple phone call. When our office encounters this type of situation, we strongly advise our client to “take the bulls by horn” and call their providers to get as much information as possible. Sometimes they even need to wait for documents to arrive in the mail. It may seem time consuming, but it is well worth the effort when it comes to negotiating a fair settlement. We strongly encourage you to seek counsel, and you can contact us for a consultation at your convenience! We can be reached at 203.745.3151, or info@wolfandshorelaw.com.

Very Truly Yours,

Wolf & Shore Law Group
