Do Fathers Have the Same Rights as Mothers?

Father’s rights can be involved in almost any family case where children are concerned, just like mother’s rights.  People used to assume that mothers automatically received custody of the children, but that is certainly no longer the case.  Each parent, whether a mother, or a father, has equal rights to their children. The Superior Courts have evolved far beyond the days of awarding custody solely to mothers and leaving fathers with only every other weekend.

In some cases, a mother may not allow a father to sign a birth certificate. If that is the case, paternity must be established before a father who is not married to the mother of the child may file a custody petition in the court.
