Dear Attorneys,

I paid my attorney a “refundable retainer.” I’ve already blown through it, and we’ve already had two court dates. She says this is normal, and a lot of work has been done “behind the scenes.” She has sent me regular invoices, and everything looks right. But why is representation so expensive?

Sincerely,

Fee Frustrated Frank

Dear Frank,

We actually hear this a lot, and we know that from a client’s perspective, it can be frustrating when your retainer is depleted. However, your attorney is right-a lot of the work necessary happens in the office. Especially with divorce cases, a lot of work is put into financial production and drafting financial affidavits. So that, coupled with court, plus correspondence and any meetings, does tend to drive up the fees. That said, if you do feel like you went through your retainer quickly, just review your invoices and reach out to your attorney with any specific questions. That’s always what we advise our clients to do.
