Co-Parenting for Your Children’s Sports: Navigating Games, Transportation, and Costs Together

Fall sports are in full swing! And that means busy schedules for parents, children, and coaches alike.  Navigating an ever-changing sports schedule, especially for more than one child, can become even more complicated if you are separated from your co-parent.  While co-parenting can come with its own set of challenges, having a child involved in sports can magnify all the associated concerns. Attending games, sharing transportation, and managing the associated costs are common hurdles for co-parents. However, with open communication and planning, you can work together to ensure your child’s athletic experience remains positive and fulfilling.

Here are some tips to help you co-parent successfully when it comes to your children’s sports:

1. Coordinate Your Schedule for Games and Practices

Attending your child’s games and practices is a great way to show support. However, balancing this with your co-parenting schedule can be tricky. One of the best approaches is to share a calendar where both of you can input important dates. Many apps allow for shared access, so you can both view practices, games, and other events.

When both parents attend games, keep the focus on your child. Even if you’re not on the best terms, demonstrating positive interaction sets a good example for your child. Sit separately if needed but remain cordial.

2. Divide Transportation Duties

Transporting your child to and from practices and games can be time-consuming, so it helps to share the responsibility. You can alternate driving or divide the week based on each parent’s availability. If you’re comfortable with it, creating a consistent transportation schedule ensures your child gets where they need to be without unnecessary stress on either parent.

3. Share the Costs Fairly

Youth sports can be expensive. Uniforms, equipment, registration fees, and travel expenses can quickly add up. When co-parenting, it’s important to discuss and agree upon how these costs will be divided. Often, parents split the expenses equally, but it’s important to tailor this arrangement based on both parents’ financial situations.

Open communication is key here. Keep all receipts and set expectations on when and how reimbursement will occur if one parent initially covers a cost. Alternatively, you could set up a joint account for sports-related expenses or use an app that tracks shared expenses for easier management.

4. Be Flexible and Considerate

Things don’t always go as planned—whether it’s a last-minute schedule change, an unanticipated cost, or a forgotten piece of equipment. Being flexible and considerate of each other’s time and efforts is critical to maintaining a smooth co-parenting relationship. When both parents are accommodating, it reduces stress for the child, allowing them to focus on enjoying their sport. Also, leave the coaches out of it. The coaches are there to support and teach your child(ren). They are not there to hear your gripes about your co-parent. In most sports, you can simply input your contact information into the app and the coach will know to contact both you and your co-parent individually.

5. Keep the Focus on Your Child

The goal is to ensure your child enjoys their sports experience and feels supported by both parents. Avoid using games or practices as a platform for airing grievances or revisiting old conflicts. The more you can align with your co-parent on this front, the more successful and rewarding the experience will be for your child.

Use the opportunity here to show your child(ren) that co-parenting is all about teamwork—and after all, that’s what sports are about too!
