March is National Women’s History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women throughout history. At Wolf & Shore Law Group, an all-female law firm, we take pride in standing on the shoulders of the trailblazing women who came before us, paving the way for greater representation in the legal field.

Why National Women’s History Month Matters

For much of history, women were excluded from practicing law, holding judicial positions, or even attending law school. It took perseverance, advocacy, and resilience to break these barriers. Today, while progress has been made, women still face challenges in the legal profession, from achieving leadership roles to closing the gender pay gap. This month serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the strides we’ve made and to continue pushing for equality in the legal industry.

Pioneering Women in Law

The legal profession has been shaped by many courageous women who refused to accept the status quo. Some of the most influential include:

  • Arabella Mansfield (1846-1911) – The first woman admitted to practice law in the United States in 1869, opening doors for future generations.
  • Belva Ann Lockwood (1830-1917) – The first woman to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court and an advocate for women’s suffrage.
  • Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-2023) – The first female justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, serving from 1981 to 2006.
  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020) – A champion for gender equality and a key figure in landmark cases that advanced women’s rights.
  • Constance Baker Motley (1921-2005) – The first Black woman appointed as a federal judge and a civil rights attorney who fought for desegregation.
  • Janet Reno (1938-2016) – The first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney General, leading with a commitment to justice.

Continuing the Legacy

At Wolf & Shore Law Group, we are proud to be part of this legacy of strong women in law. As an all-female firm, we understand the importance of lifting each other up and supporting women in legal careers. We believe that mentorship, education, and advocacy are key to ensuring that the next generation of women lawyers continues to thrive.

As we celebrate National Women’s History Month, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the progress women have made—not only in law but across all industries—and to continue advocating for a future where equality is the norm.
